What distinguishes the Mazda CX-50 and the Mazda CX-90?

With the launch of the CX-30 a few years ago, Mazda introduced a new series of premium and modern models which join its regular lineup as more refined and more expensive options. The CX-50 and the CX-90 are the two latest additions to this line, so here is a better look at both.

The CX-50 is more rugged

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a large five-passenger SUV which is aimed at drivers who want a refined vehicle which is more capable in off-road driving and more focused on adventure and ruggedness than the CX-5. This is why the CX-50 is equipped with more plastic cladding on the outside and an available Meridian Package that goes all-in on the lifestyle accessories, such as an available roof-top platform with tent and a matte black graphics package. The CX-50 shares its powertrains with the CX-5 and other Mazda models since it comes standard with a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque while a turbocharged version of the same engine is available with up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when using premium fuel.

The CX-90 is more luxury-oriented

Mazda has been trying to move its products upmarket over the last few years and the brand-new 2024 CX-90 is its strongest effort yet. This new three-row SUV that can carry up to eight passengers is built on  a new rear-wheel-drive-biased architecture that is inspired by models offered in the premium segment. This is also true of the engine, since the new CX-90 is powered by either a new turbocharged inline-six-cylinder powertrain making up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, or by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5L four-cylinder with electric motors to deliver 323 horsepower, and 369 lb-ft of torque.

The trim levels

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 and the 2023 Mazda CX-50 also differ in terms of trim levels since the first offers eight trim levels while the latter only has two. This means that the CX-90 can appeal to a wider range of buyers by offering a longer price range. Indeed, the entry-level versions of the CX-90 are aimed at drivers who need space for their growing families while the higher trim levels are decidedly aimed at those who want a luxury experience for less than in a comparably equipped model from a premium brand.
