Mazda's First-Ever CX-90 Models Receive Coveted IIHS 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+ Award

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conferred its highest honor, the 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+, on the Mazda CX-90 Mild Hybrid Inline 6 Turbo (MHEV) and the CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). This accolade comes in a year when IIHS tightened its award criteria, further elevating the achievement for Mazda.

IIHS President David Harkey lauded the CX-90 models' outstanding performance as a clear indicator of Mazda's dedication to vehicle safety. Meanwhile, David Klan, President and CEO of Mazda Canada Inc., emphasized the brand's continual efforts in engineering advancements, remarking that safety is the primary focus in Mazda’s development strategy and often a key determinant in consumers' buying choices.

To be eligible for the 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must excel in several safety tests. These include the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. Additionally, the vehicle must offer acceptable or good standard headlights across all trim levels. An available front crash prevention system earning advanced or superior ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations is also a requirement.

Notably, other Mazda models like the Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport, and CX-30 received the IIHS 2023 TOP SAFETY PICK award when equipped with optional front crash prevention technology. The CX-5 and CX-50 also achieved the same recognition but with standard equipment.

This latest honor solidifies Mazda's reputation as a leader in automotive safety, meeting the stringent requirements set forth by safety experts.
