A Look at the Engines of the New 2024 Mazda CX-90

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is not only an all-new vehicle in the Mazda lineup, it is also based on an entirely new architecture and powertrains that have not been used in any other vehicle before. Here is a closer look at them.
The standard inline-six-cylinder engine
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is powered by an all-new turbocharged 3.3L inline-six-cylinder engine that delivers 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. As with all CX-90 engines, this new powertrain is electrified. Indeed, it is equipped with a mild-hybrid system. This means that a small electric motor is installed between the engine and the new 8-speed automatic transmission in order to provide assistance to the gasoline engine during acceleration and make for a lower fuel consumption of only 9.3 L/100km in combined driving. In addition to being powerful and efficient, this six-cylinder engine is smoother and more refined than competing four-cylinder powertrains.
The high-output six-cylinder engine
The GT-P and Signature versions of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 come standard with a higher output version of the same turbocharged 3.3L inline-six-cylinder engine. As with the standard version, this powertrain is a mild-hybrid system that uses a 48-volt battery and electric assistance to deliver 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using premium fuel. Despite its impressive performance, this engine only requires 9.5 L/100km in combined city and highway driving.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain
The third powertrain option for the new 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid powertrain to be offered in Canada. This new powertrain combines a 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that receives its power from a 17.8 kWh battery pack. This combination delivers a combined output of 323 horsepower and the same 369 lb-ft peak torque figure as the high-output six-cylinder engine. This makes the CX-90 PHEV fun to drive and more powerful than many of its competitors. In addition, the presence of the high-capacity battery gives the CX-90 the ability to drive on electric power alone in many circumstances, allowing most drivers to complete their daily commute without using fuel or generating polluting emissions.
As with every other Mazda SUV currently offered in Canada, the new 2024 CX-90 comes standard with the i-Activ all-wheel drive system with all three of its powertrains.
